Amitom countries

Bulgaria

Due to the rise of energy and fertiliser prices (+40%) and the planned refurbishment of the largest factory Balkan , the volume processed in 2026 should see a 50% reduction to 20,000 tonnes. The weather is currently a bit wet, but it should not be an issue to start planting towards the end of April as planned.

Egypt

The forecast remains the same at 800,000 tonnes.

France

The forecast is still uncertain as price and volume negotiations are still ongoing but expected to reduce to 150,000 tonnes probably with a reduction of conventional surfaces, while organics should increase, for a total of less than 2,000 hectares. The weather is not good as there have been a lot of rains throughout the winter and fields are still wet. Transplanting should have started this week but may be delayed to next week as it is currently windy and cold.

Greece

The weather is nice and fields have been prepared for planting which should start this week in the South and next week in the Centre. The main worry is the effect of the war on energy and fertiliser prices despite some government assistance. The forecast remans 450,000 tonnes. Prices have been made public and average about 115 euros/tonne delivered, with some variations.

Hungary

The current forecast is still circa 70,000 tonnes. The plantings in the nurseries started last week.

Iran

There is currently a high level of uncertainty and communication is difficult. Iran has temporarily banned the export of tomatoes and tomato-based products under the current circumstances. More information will be sent when available.

Italy

The situation in Northern Italy is favourable in terms of overall water availability (we had a rainy winter) and also regarding soil preparation. The forecast is maintained at the level issued in February (3 million tonnes).

The negotiation of volumes and economic conditions between processors and growers’ associations experienced a series of delays and difficulties due to changed energy cost conditions (which affect not only the fuels used for farming operations but also cultivation costs such as technical inputs including nitrogen fertilizers). The negotiations finally closed on Friday 27 March with an average reference price of €137/ton ex-field, including premiums for late delivery and for services.

In Centre-South Italy, the situation is better than last year, the water availability is fine in several areas, but while the Occhito dam is in a better situation, it is not enough.

As usual, the processors and growers’ associations were waiting for the North to set their price and only after they will start negotiations.

The international situation with the blockade of Hormuz is creating many concerns about the consequences for the costs of diesel and fertilizers, and this will not help negotiations.

The forecast is updated to 2,8 million tonnes, so the total expectation for Italy is now 5.8 million tonnes.

Portugal

Portugal was affected by several storms which resulted in floods in all the tomato growing area. The borders of some fields by the river Tagus were damaged which means water flooded land. At the moment we are having good Spring weather which will help for drying some areas still with water. The start of transplant is planned for the 6th of April. Therefore, for the time being we keep the estimation for 1.3 million tonnes. Prices for the season are about 106-107 euros per tonnes ex field as reported in the press.

Serbia

So far, the season has been good, and expectations are for 57,000 tonnes to be processed if yields of about 90 t/ha are reached like last year.

Spain

The winter has been good in terms of rain and reservoirs in Andalusia and Extremadura are full which should ensure a good water supply for the next four years. The weather is now good and planting started last week in Andalusia and will next week in Extremadura. Prices have been agreed at about 107 euros/tonne ex field or 115 euros/tonne delivered but some farmers are now asking for an increase due to the rising costs of energy and fertilisers. The forecast is raised to 2.75 million tonnes.

Tunisia

At this stage, we do not yet have any processing forecasts for the current season. The only data currently available relates to the planned area under cultivation, estimated at around 15,300 hectares.

Turkey

From the information gathered surfaces may be slightly reduced in the South and stable or slightly increased in the Bursa area. The weather has been wet last week, and more rain is expected next week so planting il be a bit later than usual. There are still stocks of products, mainly canned paste and exports are reduced due to unfavourable exchange rate. The production is expected to be between 2.4 and 2.5 million tonnes. There are no public figures on prices, but contracts are currently about 525 TRL delivered, equivalent to 100 euros, although famers are requesting increased following rising costs, or they may reduce the fertiliser use, which may impact yields.

Ukraine

Fields are ready, growing in nurseries started in time, transplanting is scheduled for the end of April. Fertilisers are available, but prices are way from reasonable, and energy price s are also up. The forecast will likely be reduced in May depending on the real situation on the ground. The battle line remains the same as a year ago.

Other WPTC countries in the Northern Hemisphere

California

Planting for the early part of the crop began in February and the weather provided ideal conditions. As we moved into March, we have seen warmer than normal temperatures which has been very good for plant growth for fields already planted. The warmer temperatures also have resulted in some minor pauses in planting and at this point it shouldn’t be an issue. The precipitation received for this year has not been what we had hoped earlier in the winter. This will result in lower water allocations in some areas of the state. Due to the reduction in acres for this season, the lower allocations will not impact acreage for this season.

Price negotiations continue at this point.

Canada

Preliminary contract intentions for 2026 are 586,000 short tons (532,000 metric tonnes). The past few weeks have seen typical early‑spring weather, including fluctuating cold‑to‑mild temperatures, overcast conditions, intermittent rainfall, and occasional wet snow, with several nights falling below freezing. Planting is set to begin in early to mid May.

China

As of the end of March, the planted area of processed tomatoes is about 50,670 hectares. It is estimated that the volume processed will be 5.92 million tonnes. The downward revision is primarily attributable to farmers’ cautious outlook for market and low planting enthusiasm.

Japan

Planting will begin in stages from the end of March, starting in Tokai region. There is no change to the forecast of 400 hectares to be planted for a volume to be processed of 24,000 tonnes.

Other WPTC countries in the Southern Hemisphere

Argentina

Argentina’s processing tomato crop for the 2026 season is currently at approximately 75% harvested area, with the campaign entering week 13 of harvest. The planted area is estimated at 5,120 hectares, and under normal yield conditions—aligned with multi-year averages—total production is projected at around 425,000 tonnes.

Yield expectations remain strong and stable, supported by the high performance observed within the Tomate 2000 program, which has helped offset the impact of recent hail events. Current yields are tracking 10–15% above last season, confirming a sustained improvement compared to 2025. Overall crop condition remains good, and fruit quality has been very satisfactory so far.

Weather conditions have remained broadly consistent throughout the season, characterized by warm, dry, and windy conditions with generally low rainfall. However, in mid-January, a severe hailstorm impacted an unusually large area in Villa Aberastain (San Juan), affecting approximately 400 hectares, with damage ranging from light to very severe.

Harvest activities began in mid-December and have progressed steadily. While some advancement was observed around weeks 5 and 8, operations have since normalized. The campaign is progressing in line with expectations and is projected to conclude by late April, depending on industrial scheduling and remaining field conditions.

Within the Tomate 2000 program, which represents a significant share of the national crop, the current situation shows a slightly more advanced stage, with 76% of the adjusted surface already harvested (2,160 ha out of 2,842 ha). Estimated total production within the program stands at approximately 293,228 tonnes, of which 229,535 tonnes have already been harvested, leaving around 63,700 tonnes still to be collected.

The average yield of harvested fields within the program is currently estimated at 106 t/ha, confirming the strong productive performance observed this season.

The Tomate 2000 program continues to increase its share within national production, currently accounting for approximately 68–69% of total estimated output. This growing participation is primarily driven by the excellent performance of its supervised area, where higher and more stable yields have consistently outperformed the national average. As a result, the program is playing an increasingly central role in supporting overall production levels in Argentina.

A clear regional dynamic is observed within the program. In San Juan, the crop is significantly more advanced, with 86% of the surface already harvested and only 14% remaining, reflecting its role as an early production zone. Notably, harvested yields have been exceptional, reaching approximately 111 t/ha, confirming the strong performance of the region this season.

In contrast, Mendoza, due to its cooler conditions, represents a later production area, with 54% harvested and 46% still pending, concentrating a significant share of the remaining harvest. Despite this later development, harvested yields have also been very strong, averaging around 91 t/ha, highlighting a solid productive performance under more challenging thermal conditions.

Australia

Harvest is nearing completion across the nation, but progress has been hampered by widespread rainfall. The combined intake stands at approximately 138,000 tonnes with total production now expected to reach around 157,000 tonnes. This is a decrease from earlier forecasts. Operations are expected to conclude shortly after Easter.

Brazil

The current forecast is 1.467 million tonnes from 15,150 hectares.

The conflict in Iran will have likely impacts on the fertilizer market, especially nitrogen fertilizers, according to a Rabobank study (2025). According to the study, approximately 45% of global urea exports transit through routes associated with the Persian Gulf, in addition to 25% of ammonia, 20% DAP, 10% MAP, and almost 30% of global sulfur circulating through these maritime routes. Diesel has already risen 60% in one week in the agricultural market.

Chile

There have been heavy rains in different tomato areas around mid-March, with more than 100 mm over 24h in some places on 16 March. Last week, all factories were working, but with lower volumes. It is too early to assess the full impact the rain may have, and the forecast is kept at 1.3 million tonnes.

South Africa

South Africa experiences dry heat wave conditions in the summer production areas. Already 75% of the summer crop has been delivered, with an average of 5.8 brix, and the summer processing season should end in late April. Currently 25% of the total South African volumes were processed at due date.

In the Northern winter production areas of Limpopo, flooding conditions are experienced, and transplanting should end in April. Winter deliveries are scheduled from April to end September.

The 2026 harvest is underway in WPTC member countries in the southern hemisphere, with no major changes in the forecast.

WPTC countries in the Southern Hemisphere

Argentina

The planted area for the 2026 processing tomato crop is estimated at 5,120 hectares. Under normal yield conditions—consistent with the multi-year average—total production is projected at approximately 427,894 tonnes.

Yields are currently tracking 10–15% higher than last season, reflecting a sustained improvement versus 2025. Crop condition remains strong, and fruit quality has been very good so far.

Weather conditions have remained broadly unchanged: warm, dry, and windy, with generally low rainfall. In mid-January, however, a hailstorm hit an unusually affected area (Villa Aberastain in San Juan), impacting an estimated ~400 hectares with damage ranging from light to very severe.

Harvest began in mid-December and is now entering week 10. Some harvesting was slightly advanced around weeks 5 and 8, but operations have since returned to a normal schedule. To date, approximately 65% of the harvest has been completed, and the campaign continues toward the planned late-April finish, depending on industry programming and remaining field conditions.

Australia

The harvest commenced on January 26th and progressed well throughout February.

So far, a total of 79,000 tonnes have been delivered. However, sustained and significant rainfall across the entire growing region over the weekend has interrupted field operations. Harvest will not resume until conditions improve and the fields have sufficiently dried down.

Chile

To date, the harvest continues without problems. The estimated harvest progress is 40 to 45% of the total estimated. The weather has been warm with no significant rainfall that could affect quality or volume; therefore, we maintain our previous yield estimate of 1.3 million tonnes.

The estimated harvest completion date remains the last week of April.

Peru

The 2025/26 harvest finished a few days ago and the raw tomatoes produced during this campaign was 150,000 tonnes.

During their board meeting on 4 February, WPTC members shared their forecasts for the coming processing season: with a total of 40.75 million metric tonnes, the current expectation for the volume of tomatoes to be processed globally in 2026 are les than 1% higher than 2025’s final production of 40.43 million tonnes.

Amitom countries

Bulgaria

The current forecast is 40,000 tonnes.

Egypt

Currently the winter crop is getting processed, and quality looks promising . It should last until mid-April. Meanwhile transplanting of summer crop is about to start in February and will last until May, with harvesting scheduled from Mid-May till September. The initial forecast for 2026 remains 800,000 tonnes.

France

lt is too early to have a precise number but it is expected that production in 2026 will be reduced due to high stocks and the current expectation is for 150,000 to 160,000 tonnes to be processed, with a 10 to 15% reduction of surfaces planted.

Greece

A reduction of the volume to about 450,000 tonnes is expected.

Hungary

The yearly target and forecast is 70.000 tonnes, of which 40,000 tonnes for Univer.

Iran

There is currently a high level of uncertainty in Iran due to ongoing tensions between Iran and the US and concerns about potential escalation. The market is very quiet, and there is limited information available, as no one is certain about how the situation will develop. At this stage, our indication for the 2026 crop is approximately 1.7 million tonnes. As we get closer to the harvest period and more reliable information becomes available, this will be updated.

Italy

Negotiations have started in the North but not yet in the South. The current processors’ intentions are for a total volume of 5.7 million tonnes with 3 million tonnes in the North, of which 200,000 tonnes organics, and 2.7 million tonnes in the Centre-South. Quantities are similar to last year. Following two years of bad crop especially in 2024, companies do not have high stocks and the situation is balanced.
There is no issue with water in the North but there are still concerns with water availability in the Puglia region due to the low level of the Occhito dam, although farmers can overcome the issue like last year by moving production to zones where water is available. Other competitive crop, notably cereals, offer low prices, so farmers are keen to plant tomatoes.

Portugal

There is still a lot of uncertainties, as negotiations with growers are ongoing. At the moment it is difficult to give a production estimate so last year’s initial forecast of 1.4 million tonnes is used. More clarity will be obtained in the next week or so as all contracts must be signed by 16 February.

Serbia

The expectations for 2026 are for a total of 52,000 tonnes, of which 45,000 tonnes for Polimark.

Spain

The situation is not very clear. The discussions with farmers on price started this week and there is no clarity yet on the surfaces which will be contracted. A very preliminary estimate would be 2.6 million tonnes based on similar hectares planted than last year, but yields were very low last year. There is no issue with water in Andalusia this year, while in Extremadura the concern is more that there is too much water and fields are saturated or even flooded at the moment with the forecast for more rains during the next ten days.

Tunisia

Initial estimates of the area planted with seasonal tomatoes are around 15,000 hectares. With regard to processing forecasts, meetings with the various stakeholders are scheduled from mid-February onwards to discuss this issue.

Turkey

In 2025, production amounted to 2,200,000 tonnes. The main reason for this low production is the reduction in planting areas due to low contract prices. If farmers’ price expectation is met in 2026, production could reach 2,500,000 to 2,600,000 tonnes. Moreover, the prices of competing products (such as cotton and corn) are also low, so producers will remain focused on tomato planting.

Ukraine

The current forecast is 550,000 tonnes.

Other WPTC countries in the Northern Hemisphere

California

According to the 2O26 California Processing Report released on 23 January the current estimate is 9.8 million short tons (8.89 million metric tonnes) from 185,000 acres. This is based on an average yield of 53 t/acre which is a level only reached last year so there is uncertainty that this volume will be attained. Surfaces should reduce by 10%, maybe even further. Weather and water availability are good so far.

Canada

Preliminary contract indications are for approximately 595,000 shorts tons (540,000 metric tonnes) in 2026 following a very good year in 2025 which saw the biggest harvest in recent years.

China

Crop Forecast for 2026 is 7 million tonnes of fresh tomatoes.

Japan

It is expected that 400 hectares will be planted for a production of 24,000 tonnes.

Nigeria

The forecast is to process 1,200 tonnes in 2026.

Other WPTC countries in the Southern Hemisphere

Argentina

The initial forecast was 427,894 tonnes from the 5,120 hectares planted but hailstorms last week damaged about 320 hectares. It is too early to precisely evaluate the losses but reasonable to reduce the forecast to 400,000 tonnes. There was a huge season in 2025 at about 600,000 tonnes so there is a major reduction in volume this year.

Australia

The production forecast remains 166,000 tonnes from about 1,500 ha planted, which is a reduction of about 500 ha from what is normally planted. Market forces are reducing the production level. Harvest started on the 26th of January and is processing has begun at Kagome. SPC are likely to start processing in about 2 weeks’ time. We have experienced back-to-back heat waves in January (a heat wave here being temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius recorded over successive days), with a long stretch of approximately a week when temperatures ranged between 4O and 45 °C. Luckily it did not rain but there have been some field leakage and some low brix low to mid 4s. Overall crop condition have now improved with brix at about 5.2-5.3 and yields do not seem to have been affected. Hopefully there will be no effect of the heatwave on the late crop which could reduce in a volume reduction. Time will tell but plants for the late crop look good for now.

Brazil

The current forecast is just over 1.5 million tonnes, The surveys indicate a further decrease in planted area and a trend towards a slightly higher volume than in 2025. It is believed that these numbers will change until March, which is when transplanting will be taking place in all regions of the country.

Chile

The first factories opened two weeks ago with the others starting this week. Weather conditions are normal, with warm weather. The only concern is how much the broomrape infestation will affect the yields. These are currently estimated at 95 to 100 t/ha, and the forecast remains unchanged at 1.3 million tonnes.

Peru

The program remains unchanged and production should finish at 150,000 tonnes.

South Africa

It is still early days with production starting this month in the Western Cape region where it is currently very dry. The total forecast remains 130,000 tonnes for the 2026 season.

Mira Mehta, CEO of Tomato Jos, will be the NATPAN Delegate on the board of WPTC.

Conditions are good in all the WPTC southern hemisphere countries where the harvest is ongoing or about to start with no major changes in forecast compared with pre-season estimates.

WPTC countries in the Southern Hemisphere

Argentina

The planted area in Argentina for the 2026 processing tomato harvest is estimated at 5,120 hectares. Under normal yield conditions, in line with the average of recent years, total production is projected at approximately 427,894 tonnes.
However, yields are likely to be closer to those achieved in the 2025 season, which recorded record yields in early and mid-season tomatoes. This outlook is supported by the fact that the most efficient producers are active this season, crops are generally in very good condition, and weather conditions have been mostly favourable.
The current season has been characterized by hot, dry, and windy conditions, with a very low incidence of hail so far. The preceding winter was mild, resulting in increased pest pressure from the beginning of the season. Spring conditions were generally normal, although strong winds complicated transplanting operations. Summer has been hot and dry, with limited rainfall and low hail incidence, which has accelerated pest cycles but at the same time improved fruit quality due to reduced disease pressure and lower weather-related damage.
Harvest began in mid-December and, according to industry planning, is expected to continue until late April. A slight advancement of harvest has been observed in fields harvested during weeks 2, 3, and 4.

Australia

A total of 1,476 ha has been planted with a combined production forecast of approximately 166,000 tonnes.
Harvest is expected to commence soon, with the early cultivars starting around 28 January. The season began with unusually cool and windy conditions, slowing early crop development. Temperatures increased to above-average levels after Christmas, with wind remaining a persistent factor.
Overall crop condition is generally good at this stage, and current volume forecasts remain achievable.

Brazil

No new data

Chile

The forecast remains unchanged compared with what was expected last October with 14,000 hectares planted with a potential yield of 100 tonnes per ha.
The harvest will start at the end of next week in the northern area near Santiago and most of the factories will start on first week of February.
The weather is hot and dry, perfect for tomato ripeness with around 30 to 35 °Celsius during the day and 15 to19 °Celsius at night.
The Chilean exports reached a good volume in 2025 with 221,000 tonnes compared with 174,000 tonnes in 2024.

Peru

The forecast remains 150,000 tonnes from 1,045 ha. Harvesting started in October and the season has been good so far.

South Africa

South Africa planned a contracted harvest of 130,000 tonnes for the 2026 season.
A 40,000 metric tonne summer crop is scheduled in the Western Cape area where deliveries were programmed to start on 15 January.
A 90,000 tonne winter crop is expected in the Limpopo area.
This gives South Africa an advantage of a 9 month production season and currently all planning is on schedule.

France

The campaign ended at the end of week 42 (w/s 13 October) in the South-West with no losses. This is not yet the case in the South-East for a handful of hectares that were not yet fully ripe where the harvest could end at the end of week 43 or at the very beginning of week 44. We have exceeded the volume contracted at the start of the season by nearly 10,000 tonnes and should therefore reach a total net volume of 185,000 tonnes with weighted penalties on volumes for each production run of 7.23% and a weighted brix of 5° for the factories that sent the information. The end of the season has been marked by difficulties in achieving ideal ripeness for harvesting the last plots, particularly in the south-east. Over the last ten (even 13…) years, 2025 ranks among the best years, except that the other two, 2016 and 2017, with slightly more than 185,000 and 193,000 tonnes, included an additional factory that is no longer in production. We can therefore consider this to be the best season in the last ten years.

Greece

The final volume is 515,000 tonnes.

Hungary

No change from last report

Iran

The 2025 Iranian tomato crop has been confirmed at 1.8 million tonnes, in line with earlier forecasts. Several factories are still in operation, and processing is expected to be completed by the end of October. Overall, the season is progressing as anticipated.

Israel

No change from last report

Italy

The particularly long and complex 2025 season has ended with a production of 5.8 million tonnes from 78,695 hectares (see ANICAV end of season press release attached). In the North, the final processed volume was 3.12 million tonnes (+27.6% compared to last year) thanks to large volumes delivered in September after a difficult start of the season. Average yield on the 45,030 hectares planted (+ 8%) were at 69.3 tonnes per hectare significantly lower than the five-year historical average of 73.2 t/ha. The season was, however, characterized by excellent quality, with a good colour and an excellent Brix level of 5, which resulted in a positive payment index, higher than the maximum recorded in the previous five years. In the Centre and South, a total of 2.71 million tonnes were processed (-5.3% compared to 2024), but the production of whole peeled tomatoes dropped by 20% due to low agricultural and processing yields, while production costs increased notably due to a significant increase in the price paid for tomatoes (up to 40% above the planned average price).

Portugal

The tomato season closed with the last processing unit on the 18th of October with a final volume of 1.3 million tonnes. 15,000 hectares were planted for this crop. The first weeks of October (weeks 40, 41 and 42) the weather was still very good with temperatures of 28-29ºC and during the night around 17-18ºC /20ºC.This means the crop was until the very last minute with a good temperature even if the time of sunlight was shorter. There were 2 days of rain and lower temperature which immediately rise again to the levels mentioned. The last fields continued with good quality, very good colour and tomato were sound and ripe being harvested in the right moment. By the weeks 41-42 the quantity of tomato decreased as the usual process towards the end of the season. Therefore, Portugal started with a forecast of 1.4 million tonnes, which was then revised for 1.35 million tonnes, and the last forecast was 1.3 million tonnes which was indeed the final number.

Spain

The campaign is finished in Andalucía and Extremadura. There are still some factories working in the Ebro valley that should finish this week or in the first days of the next. We estimate final production is about 2.4 million tonnes.

Tunisia

As of 19 October, only one unit is still operating and the total quantities processed amount to approximately 938,000 tonnes.

Turkey

The processing season ended on 23 October in Konya. The total production is confirmed at 2.2 million tonnes.

Ukraine

Processing is not finished yet and the total volume should be between 450,000 and 480,000 tonnes.

Other WPTC countries in the Northern Hemisphere

California

The estimate is to process 49,222 short tons (44,653 metric tonnes) this week. At the end of this week (week ending 25 October) we could have processed 11,650,182 short tons (10,568,867 metric tonnes). Due to a few rain storms the last 10 days the remaining processors have decided to end production this week. The final estimate will be close to the 11,650,000 short tons (10,570,000 metric tonnes).

Canada

The harvest is now complete, having run later than normal, and preliminary numbers indicate that contracted tonnage was achieved. Despite some disease pressure, overall crop quality and yields were good.

China

No change from last report

Japan

Harvesting in Japan ended in the third week of October with a total volume processed of 22,000 tonnes, from 425 hectares planted. Growth was smooth nationwide until early June. However, high temperatures and drought from mid-June through August resulted in reduced plant vigour, poor fruit set, and smaller fruit, resulting in a significant decrease in production compared to the previous year.

WPTC members during their Board meeting and the 2025 Tomato News Conference on 5 October 2025 established the preliminary world production estimate for 2025 at just below 40.3 million tonnes, down 12% from the 45.8 million tonnes processed globally in 2024.

Bulgaria

The season is almost finished and should be fulled completed by 15 October. It was very good with high quality and brix values around 5. The total volume procesed is about 40,000 tonnes, of which 30,000 tonnes for the largest processor Balkan.

Egypt

The Summer Season was exceptional this year in particularly for color achieving +2.2 in final products. There were many days with high temperatures in average +40° (as it become the norm every year) which put pressure on the ripening of fresh tomatoes, and also advancing the maturity of some quantities from the next Nili Crop in some areas “that were supposed to start in October”. This eventually pressured the daily supply of tomatoes to factories to oversupply level on many days.

Summer harvesting finished on 20th September and now it is a transition period till next season (Nili Crop). Harvesting of Nili crop shall start from the second week of November till the end of December, while the Winter Crop (in southern governorates) starts from January till April.

For now the forecast of 780,000 tonnes is maintained for the year 2025 (Egypt crop is throughout the year, from January with the the beginning of Winter Crop till the end of Nili crop in December).
The initial forecast for 2026 is 800,000 tonnes.

France

At the end of September the volume processed was 161,000 tonnes which is 92% of the contracts, with an average brix of 5 and 7.2% of penalties due largely to a lot of green tomatoes. In the Southwest processing it at 80% of contracts. There was a lot of rain in the Southeast last week with up to 130 mm in two hours in some, luckily less on the tomato fields but the weather is better this week, with wind drying the fields and no rain forecast. The harvest should finish in 15 to 20 days at the level of the contracts of 175,000 tonnes, maybe slightly more.

Greece

The last factory closed last Sunday. It was a very smooth season with a total volume processed of about 510,000 tonnes.

Hungary

The season ended last week, with excellent harvest averages and very good quality (average brix at Univer was 5.5, a historical best). According to the previous forecast, this year’s processing season closed with a higher quantity, approximately 97,000 tonnes, of which two-thirds for Univer and one-third for Aranyfácán.

The weather was typically favourable for tomatoes after the cooler May, apart from the drought, but producers had the necessary capacities for irrigation. The dry weather helped to avoid crop protection problems. Therefore this year’s harvest was outstanding in both quality and quantity. The average yeild was 97 t/ha, an outstanding result from about 1,000 ha.

Iran

The crop is delayed and factories will still be running for another 2 to 3 weeks or maybe until the end of October. Some rain in the north did not really affect the season. The forecast is confirmed at 1.8 million tonnes. The main challenges are due to the political tensions causing uncertainties on the markets.

Israel

Italy

In the North, the last official figures show that as of 21 September, 2.85 million tonnes had been processed of which 350,000 tonnes in the last week (week 38), with an average brix of 5.05, 4.9% penalties and a payment index of 101%.
In the last week (week 39) very small volumes were processed due to widespread rains, especially in the West, with around 80 mm in some areas. The weather is better this week and harvesting has fully resumed. The season is however nearing the end with many factories already closed and the others closing at the end of the week. Only one factory is expected to operate next week. The total forecast is now 3.025 million tonnes.

In the Centre and South, the weather in September has been very good, better than average, and the volume processed is higher than expected, notably for the long varieties. Quality remains good, with good colour although brix levels have decreased as is normal for the season. Many factories closed at the end of September although some are still running. The expectation is now 2.675 million tonnes, bringing the total for Italy back to 5.7 million tonnes.

Portugal

Late spring rains forced planting to start later than usual: instead of the end of March, it could only be normalized from May onwards. Stable weather conditions allowed this operation to continue until the second week of June.
Due to delayed transplanting, harvesting and processing could only begin in week 32, with just two factories in operation. In week 33, most processors started running at reduced speed, gradually increasing their daily capacity between the end of week 32 and the beginning of week 34. From week 35 onwards, a few were operating at 50%, while the remaining units gradually reached full capacity.

In this campaign, not all units were able to operate at full capacity, as the early fields produced low yields, with volumes only improving from week 35 onwards. Although the initial estimated volume for Portugal is expected to show a decline, some processors will achieve their production targets.
Overall, the ongoing crop has demonstrated very good quality results in the majority of processing units.
Although this crop presented unique characteristics due to delayed transplanting and harvesting – occurring approximately two weeks later than usual – the quality of Portuguese production was not compromised. Portuguese tomatoes are renowned for their balanced sugar-to-acid ratio and, in particular, for their strong colour. In the 2025 crop, this attribute was further enhanced, with consistently high values recorded throughout the season.
On the other hand, the lower Brix value of the fresh tomato had a negative impact on processing efficiency.

The last two weeks have been quite good for the time of the year with one very good week followed by some rain on27-28 September which was not significant and only slowed operations temporarily. The weather is currently good with temperatures of 27-28 °C with nights at 15-17°C.
As of 28 September, 82% of the forecast of 1.3 million tonnes had been achieved, and there are still significant volumes to be harvested. The harvest is now slowing down and the season should end around 15-16 October. Quality remains good with good colour and brix around 5°.

Spain

The season is nearly over in Andalusia with only one factory still running.
In Extremadura factories in the vegas Altas have all closed and the season should end around 13/14 October in the Begas Bajas where there was a peak in production last week.
In the North, the harvest is going well. Factories are still at full capacity and should operate until 20th October.
The overall forecast remains 2.4 million tonnes, down from the first estimate of 2.6 million tonnes.

Tunisia

The season is now finished and the total volume processed in 2025 was 935,000 tonnes in 24 plants. A total of 15,700 ha were planted.

Turkey

Planted surface in Turkey was decreased by 25% compared to last year due to low tomato prices in 2024. Production has ended in south, last days in north region. Konya region will continue another week. Season was stable : decent weather conditions, stable prices , balanced supply-demand , low processing capacity used. The total production is 2.2 million tonnes.

Ukraine

The forecast is reduced to 500,000 tonnes, or maybe less.

Other WPTC countries in the Northern Hemisphere

California

This season has been a record for California. It is a “Unicorn Season” something we have heard could exist, but have never experienced or seen with our own eyes, until this season.
A few key factors (not all):
• The reduction of acreage meant plantings were on the very best soils
• Water availability
• Excellent Weather, during planting, throughout the Spring ,during bloom, crop development, and during harvest.
• The extreme high temperatures that were experienced over the last few seasons didn’t happen this year.

This all translated to very little stress for the crop at any point in the season. This allowed for a 18.75% increase in yield from our historical 5 year average. In consequence, the production estimate has been raised to 11.75 million short tons, 10.65 million metric tonnes.

Canada

The estimate remains 475,000 tonnes.

China

The total volume in China is about 4.9 million tonnes, including 3.02 million tonnes in Northern Xinjiang, 1.07 million tonnes in Southern Xinjiang, 0.76 million tonnes in Inner Mongolia, and 60,000 tonnes in Gansu-Ningxia.

In the Inner Mongolia region, 20% of the planting area was severely affected by heavy rains and floods from July to August, causing a significant production decline.

82 factories were running, a decrease of 24 compared to the 2024 crop, equivalent to the 2020 level. The daily capacity is 214,000 tonnes, a decrease of 60,000 tonnes compared to 2024 (-22%).

The 2025 season has been shortened by 22 days compared with 2024, only 50% of full capacity.

Up to on 30th September,the raw material price for China in 2025 is 67 USD/t. This is an increase of 2 USD/t compared to May 2025, but compared to 2024, it dropped by 9 USD/t.
Compared to 2024，the cumulative trade figures over eight months in China were gradually tending to incease. The total export of bulk and repack tomato products (HS CODE 200290) was 0.77 million tonnes, a year-on-year increase of 3% compared to 2024. and the total of bulk was 0.46 million tonnes, a year-on-year increase of 10% compared to 2024.
It is estimated that the volume will reach 6 to 7 million tonnes in 2026, primarily due to:
– Considering the natural growth of the market.
– The reasonable production level for China is between 6-8 million tonnes over the past 20 years.
– The 2025 production fell significantly below the level.

Japan

The total volume processed in 2025 is about 25,000 tonnes from 425 hectares. Expectations are for 430 hectares to be planted in 2026 to proces 26,000 tonnes.

Other WPTC countries in the Southern Hemisphere

Argentina

The total harvested area for 2025 reached 7,300 hectares, with a production output of 620,250 processed tonnes. Record yields were achieved for early- and mid-season tomatoes, while late-season tomatoes recorded average yields.

For the 2025/26 season, plantations have begun with fewer wind-related issues than usual. Nationwide, a reduced planted area of approximately 6,000 hectares is expected, with a projected production of 550,000 tonnes. Currently, one-third of the planned area has been planted. The milder winter has raised concerns about potential pest pressure on early-season tomatoes, as pests are likely to have survived on overwintering hosts.
The reduction in planted area can be attributed to several factors: stock levels in domestic processing plants, slower market demand, and increased competition from tomato paste imports from Chile and China. These conditions have led growers to scale back on planting for the current season.

Australia

The forecast has been reduced to 166,000 tonnes to be processed in 2026 by two processors.

Brazil

We had a turbulent start to the harvest season regarding ripening, which initially began with good color but lasted for a very short time, with July and August being significantly impacted by green fruit and productivity losses.

There is a climate consensus that the first semester had no occurrence of intense cold, which favored the ripening of the initial areas. However, starting June 20th, we experienced a significant drop in average temperatures that extended until the end of August, thus bringing substantial ripening delays, consequent harvest delays, and excessive discarding of green fruit in some situations, contributing to even sharper productivity declines. The numbers indicate a 14% reduction compared to the 2024 harvest. A 7% reduction compared to the last estimate made.
The trend for 2026 is the stability of production volume and area at 2025 levels.

Chile

About 14.000 hectares should be planted for the 2026 crop, for a crop of approximately 1.3 million tonnes. There is a delay in plan ting due to rains, but it is too early to determine if it will delay the harvest.

Peru

A total volume of 150,000 tonnes is expected for this coming crop. Harvesting is now starting and should continue until February 2026.

South Africa

South Africa ended on 160,000 tonnes for 2025 season, as planned. It was a good season. The forecast for the 2026 season is not clear, but the first estimate is 130,000 tonnes or even less, a 20% decline on the total volumes for 2026.

The harvest is now progressing well with full volumes. Our harvesting for late tomatoes and at the end of September many processors will finish. The harvest is now progressing well with full volumes since yesterday. Quality is good with less green Brix averages 5 and colour almost good at 2.30-2.35. The quality remains quite good, with very good Colour. There is a considerable area from one farmer to be harvested where tomato fields are still green which means the crop will continue into October.

Egypt

The summer crop is almost done with about 98% of the volume and will finish by 20th September. It is going well at the moment. Then there will be a transition period with the small Nili crop until the end of December before the winter crop starts in January.

France

At the end of last week 140,000 tonnes had been processed with 7% penalties and an average brix of 5.08. This is 80% of the contracts. The quality is good but more and more green fruits are delivered to the factories. A few small plants have already closed but the harvest should continue for another 2 to 3 weeks and should reach the forecast of 175,000 tonnes or maybe reach 180,000 tonnes. Some rain is expected in the south-west next week, and maybe in the south-east too.

Greece

The season is finished in the South and it will continue with small quantities until the end of September in the Centre where already 90-95 % of the volumes have been processed. In the centre the farm yields are very high and some of the tomatoes will not be harvested. The overall forecast is raised to 510,000 tonnes. Brix averages 5 and colour is good at 2.30-2.35.

Hungary

Leaving mid-September behind, we could be approaching the end of the season this weekend. However, the harvest has been hampered by rains in the past week, so the previously smoothly progressing processing has been disrupted by the precipitation. As previously reported, both the yield averages and the quality remain excellent. The quantity forecast has increased accordingly; we expect the total quantity to be around 95,000 tonnes.

Iran

The situation has improved and there are more tomatoes and factories are at now at full capacity. The weather has cooled down to the high 20°C which favours the harvesting, and there is no issue with water. Consequently, the forecast may increase to 1.8 million tonnes and maybe more as there are tomatoes available and low prices on the market.

Israel

Italy

In the North, the last report available from OI Pomodoro North is updated to 07/09 with 2.18 million tonnes processed brix average of 5.15 and penalties of 4,18%. The week from 1st to 7 September shows a volume of 263,000 tonnes delivered with a weekly average brix of 4.87 that is lower compared to the previous weeks and quite normal for late crop tomatoes. Quality remains good.
For last week that ended 14 September official figures are not available yet, but we expect to have processed more than 300,000 tonnes since the rain we had was very limited and did not interrupt the harvest.
From now on, there are almost two weeks left of harvesting for late tomatoes and at the end of September many processors will finish. In October will remain a very little quantity.
We keep the forecast at 3 million tonnes which is an ambitious goal at the moment given the delivery situation, but we’ll see how the harvest evolves this week and if the weather conditions (a low pressure system is expected to pass at the beginning of next week) will allow us to reach this target or not.
In the Centre and South, 2.05 million tonnes had been processed as of 8 September with data from last week still being collected. Heavy rain of up to 140 mm last Wednesday on the Tyrrhenian side stopped the harvest until Monday but it did not affect Puglia. The harvest is now progressing well with full volumes since yesterday. Quality is good with less green than earlier on. Yields are very poor in areas irrigated with the Occhito dam, sometimes as low as 25 tonnes per hectare and the average yields are expected to be around 75 t/ha, against a normal 80 t/ha.

The total expectation for Italy remains 5.5 million tonnes.

Portugal

On the 7th of September we had the first rain that was mainly during the night with no major consequences. Last week and specially this week the weather is quite good with temperatures between 30-35ºC and evenings between 13-16ºC with cool mornings.
The quality remains quite good, with very good colour, but the average brix remains low at 5 which is clearly a characteristic of this season.
On 14th September, 55% of the estimated volume for Portugal had been harvested even if not all factories are at the same level of processing.
There is a considerable area to be harvested where tomato fields are still green which means the crop will continue into October.
In the area of Alentejo, the yields through the harvesting have been lower than usual, and in the area of Ribatejo current fields being harvested for the last two weeks have improved compared with the beginning of the season. Since there is still half of the crop to go, the forecast is kept for now at 1.3 million tonnes as any change will depend on the next weeks to come.

Spain

In Andalucia the season is almost finished with only one factory still running. Yields were the lowest ever and production is 20% lower than expected. In Extremadura, in the Vegas Altas, factories should all close between 20 and 30 September. Field yields were also 10 to 20% lower than normal. In the Vegas Bajas the harvest could continue until 10-12 October if weather conditions are good. To date, the weather has been good in September with only one day of rain and good temperatures to date. The final result will depend on the weather in the next couple of weeks but the forecast of 2.4 million tonnes is maintained.

Tunisia

As of 15 September, only two factories remain open with a total volume processed to date of 934,000 tonnes. The season is nearing the end.

Turkey

The harvest is finished in the South and has a maximum of ten days more to go in the Bursa area. Factories are running at a low capacity now and quality is average to good. The weather is good with no rain forecast.
In the Konya region the harvest will continue until mid October but surfaces were reduced this year.
The overall forecast remains 2.2 million tonnes.

Other WPTC countries in the Northern Hemisphere

California

The estimate is to process 882,213 short tons (800,330 metric tonnes)this week. At the end of this week (week ending 20th September) we will have processed 9,250,998 short tons (8,391,459 metric tonnes). The crop still continues to perform very well this year. If the weather continues to stay dry, expectations are that the 11 million short tons (9.9 million metric tonnes) NASS estimate will be achievable. By Tuesday two processors will have finished for the season. It is expected that we will have some volume until the end of October.

Canada

Harvest is approximately 53% complete and will most likely run late this season. While the overall crop looks good, some of the fruit has been affected by blossom end rot.

China

The total volume in China is about 4.9 million tons, including 3.02 million tonnes in Northern Xinjiang, 1.07 million tonsne in Southern Xinjiang, 0.76 million tonnes in Inner Mongolia, and 60 thousand tonnes in Gansu-Ningxia. Australia

The forecast has been reduced to 166,000 tonnes to be processed in 2026 by two processors. A very dry spring is allowing farmers to complete final soil-bed preparations ahead of planting, scheduled to begin on 24th September.

Bulgaria

Half of the surfaces have now been harvested and factories are running at full capacity. The quality is better than last year with an average brix slightly over 5. The season should finish on target at the end of September.

Egypt

Harvesting expected to last till mid or 20 September, then we will have a transition period till 10 or mid of November to start the harvesting of Nili crop from (Sharkia, Beni Suif, Al-Fayoum & few quantities from Al-Minya – which has its peak during winter crop). The forecast remains the same at this moment.

France

To date 105,000 tonnes have been processed which is 60% of the total forecast which remains unchanged at 175,000 tonnes. Average brix is 5.17 and the penalties level at 6.8%. Quality is good now, but fruits were damaged in some fields as they were harvested overmature during the heatwave in the beginning of august. It rained both in the South-East and the South-West in the last few days, with a very heavy localised storm, and more rain is perhaps expected tomorrow everywhere and also next week in the South-West, so a difficult beginning of September seems to be foreseen.

Greece

The harvest is progressing well and there are no issues to report. The South should finish by next Monday and the Centre, where 75% of the crop has been harvested to date, around 20 September.

Hungary

By the beginning of September, we were halfway through the season. Harvesting was hampered by regional rains, but processors were able to operate continuously. Yields and quality are both excellent, and we can operate with extremely high Brix. The annual volume forecast is currently unchanged, but a minor correction may be necessary depending on the remaining areas.

Iran

The situation has improved as, after a poor harvest in the South, the season is going well in the North and West of the country with factories running at full capacity and expected to do so until the end of September. Temperatures are now good at 30-32°C and may drop but no rain is expected soon. Consequently, the total production could reach 1.8 million tonnes if good conditions continue, although the forecast remains 1.6 million tonnes for now.

Israel

No new data

Italy

In the North, the last figures released by OI Pomodoro Northern Italy reports as for 24 August a total volume processed of 1.62 million tonnes with an average brix of 5,21 and penalties 4,62. Quality remained good but there are some excess of green tomatoes due to staggered fruiting on the plant. Last week and at the start of this one we had rain in all northern regions from Alessandria to Ferrara (with some heavy rain in Mantova and Verona with more than 100 mm) with several days in which it was not possible to harvest tomatoes and the factories remained closed The yield in the fields remain lower than average and despite the highest surface ever planted (around 45,000 hectares) it will be difficult to get the target of 3.2 million tonnes and we revise the number to 3 million tonnes considering the situation and the % of hectares already collected. The weather forecast for the next two weeks is good. Let’s see how it goes and if late crops can recover something on the average yields. In the Centre-South the situation is not good with most factories now at less than 50% capacity as tomatoes are not ripening. There is a split maturation with some ripe tomatoes while the third crown still green so many green tomatoes are left in the fields. Many greens are also delivered to the factories, so the processing yields now are the worst recorded in the last ten years, after a good start. Processors are paying higher prices than initially expected especially for long tomato varieties. It will be a long crop from 15 July to an expected end in early October. The forecast for Italy is reduced from 5.8 to 5.5 million tonnes for now but the final level will depend on a good September.

Portugal

The crop is delayed with only about 30% of the volume processed to date. The ripening of tomatoes is irregular, which means that in some areas there is 25-30% of green tomatoes left in the fields after harvesting. There are also fields which are still too green and growers need to wait for the ripening. The most delayed fields are still in the development stage; these were in areas flooded the longest after the rains in April and are the most late fields. Even with all this irregularity in the tomatoes fields we are having very good colour, and while brix was low in the beginning, now it is better than average. Therefore, the forecast is reduced from 1.35 to 1.3 million tonnes, but the next three weeks will be crucial to advance the crop even if going into October (not sure for how long) will be inevitable.

Spain

The harvest is late and as of 31 August only 47% of the expected overall volume had been processed, when normally it is about 63%. About 62% of the target has been achieved in Andalusia where the first factory is expected to close around 9-10 September, and only 20 to 40% in Extremadura depending on the area where the harvest is expected to finish around 10 October. Yields are on average down by 20% in Andalusia and they fluctuate in Extremadura but are generally also lower than usual. Fortunately, brix levels are generally higher than normal. Temperatures are now cool, but rain is forecast this weekend.
The total forecast is reduced for now from 2.5 to 2.4 million tonnes, but the final production will depend on a good September harvest. There is no factory running at full capacity.

Tunisia

As of 1 September 2025, four units remain in operation, with a total processed volume of 920,000 tonnes of tomatoes.

Turkey

The southern area is as of today finished harvesting. The Bursa area is around 50% through the harvest with an expected increase in harvest speed over the next 2 weeks due to bunching in the late planting from the high temperatures. There is also a lower yield in the later harvest and due to this we will reduce our forecast to 2.2 million tonnes. The Konya region started the harvest last week and is going on.

Ukraine

No new data

Other WPTC countries in the Northern Hemisphere

California

The estimate is to process 1,040,143 short tons (10,015,319 metric tonnes) this week. At the end of this week (week ending 6 September) we will have processed 7,411,803 short tons (6,723,146 metric tonnes). There is very little difference from the last 3 reports. The crop continues to perform at or above contracted levels statewide. Overall quality continues to be very good in all aspects. The latest USDA/NASS estimate was released last week. The total tons expected increased to 11 million short tonnes (just under 10 million metric tonnes) from the May estimate of (10.3 million tons (9.3 million metric tonnes).

Canada

Harvest is approximately 30% complete and the crop looks good with above average yields and good colour. There is some concern that the cooler weather we’ve been experiencing may slow maturity in the late planted crop, delaying harvest.

China

There is no major difference on the forecast to date but it will very probably go further down. More details will be available soon.

Japan

There is no change of the forecast of 25,000 tonnes from 420 hectares. Harvesting is scheduled to continue until early September in northern Tohoku region and until the end of September in Hokkaido region, but harvest yields may be reduced due to disease caused by high temperatures and drought.

Other WPTC countries in the Southern Hemisphere

Brazil

Due to weather problems like cold temperatures which are below averages this season, a reduction of about 14% in the tomato crop compared to 2024 season or 7% below the previous numbers for the current season is expected. The revised forecast for 2025 is thus 1.42 million tonnes.

South Africa

South Africa already processed 94% of the planned crop. The current projection is unchanged at 160 000 tonne for the 2025 season. Orerall, it is a good season.
